Abstract

N-beta-hydroxyethyl aziridines and iminothiazolidines of formula R-CH(OH)-CH2-N-CH2CH2-A (I) (where A = a direct bond or -S-C(=NH)- and R = phenyl, tolyl, pyridyl, picolyl, furyl, thienyl or thiazolyl) are prepd. by redn. of a ketone of formula R-C(=O)-CH2-N-CH2CH2-A using as the reducing agent a bis-alkoxy sodium aluminium dihydride (R'O)2AlNaH2 (where R' = lower alkyl, tetrahydrofuryl, or tetrahydropyranylyl). (I) are inters for the prepn. of anthelmintics (e.g. tetramisole). Process is simple and gives good yields.
