Abstract

Combustion of ammonia with a feed of oxygenated gas comprises decomposing the NH3 in a decompsn. appts. into a permanent combustible gas and bringing this and the oxygenated gas required for its combustion into a combustion chamber where the mixt, is ignited. Provides all the advantages of a hydrogen fuel without the difficulties of storage and transport or the hazards involved and eliminates the prodn. of toxic combustion prods. Used a fuel for internal combustion engines, heating plants and power stations, replacing fossil fuels. Either liq. NH3 or a deriv. of NH3 partic. ammonium bicarbonate may be used. Derivs. may be decomposed into NH3 and sec. prods. in a prim. decomposer and the NH3 further split up into H2 and N2 in a sec. decomposer. The decompsn. chamber may be installed in or adjacent to the combustion chamber for the H2 which is provided with a suitable means of igniting the combustible mixt.
