Abstract

The method produces inert gases to fill up the tanks. The diesel engine exhaust gases are mixed with secondary air and, by burning in it a fuel, its oxygen content is reduced to a safe level, such that the burnt gases will not have any combustive power and may be considered chemically inert. The main advantage of this process is the gas availability and, therefore, its low cost. If, for example the exhaust gas oxygen content is 12%, this value can be brought down to 5%. The inert gases produced by the process may then be passed through a heat exchanger to cool them and to produce water vapour.
