Abstract

Impurities are removed from fat-containing wastewater in order to recover the fats in the form of fatty acids. This purification of the wastewater is economical and the fatty acids can be expediently extracted from the wastewater. In the process, the working steps conventionally used for the purification of wastewater are combined in a novel manner. By addition of aluminium ions or iron(III) ions at a pH beneath 5 and subsequent precipitation in the presence of alkaline earth metal ions and separating off the precipitated material by flotation, a flotation sludge is obtained. This separated-off flotation sludge is adjusted to a pH beneath 2, a lower aqueous phase and an upper concentrated fat sludge phase forming which is separated off and heated at a pH below 2 and this phase in turn separates into an upper phase composed of fatty acids which is separated off and a lower aqueous phase which contains the precipitation chemicals. This can, if required, be recycled in order to treat additional fat-containing wastewater.
