Abstract

A compsn. which produces the sensation of cold when applied to the skin or mucous membranes contains a cpd. which stimulates the cold receptors of the nervous system of surface tissues in the human body, of formula (I): (where n = 0-6; R is 1-6C alkyl; x = 1-4; X is OH, COOH, COOR1 or CONR1R2; R1 is 2-4C hydroxyalkyl; R2 is H or 1-10C alkyl and R3 is H, 1-10C alkyl, 1-10C hydroxyalkyl or =8C alkanoyloxyalkyl, or R2 is H and R3 is =8C cycloalkyl, phenyl, or phenyl substd. by alkyl, OH or MeO (total =10C), or R2 and R3 together form a =8C alkylene gp. opt. interrupted by an O atom; with the proviso that at least one R gp. is in the 1 or 2 posn. relative to the X gp. when X = OH or in the 1,2 or 3 posn. when X = COOH, COOR1 or CONR2R3, and that the R gp(s). and the carbocyclic ring contain a total of 8-14C atoms). Cpds. (I) can be used in toilet and cosmetic articles, foodstuffs, tobacco prodts. and pharmaceutical compsns. The cpds. have a physiological cooling effect similar to menthol (sometimes superior) without having the strong peppermint aroma of menthol.
