Abstract

A fragrant aromatic compsn. with a refreshing effect contains 1'-(hydroxy-3'-p-methanyl)-2-ethanol of formula (I) A toilet water compsn. contains 2% (I). A food compsn. contains 0.1-1 gm. (I)/kg. of food prod. The cpds. are used in cosmetic prods. such as after-shave lotions, shaving creams, deodorants; also in mouth washes, dentifrices, cigarettes, and foods. The cpds. give a refreshing effect to the skin, nose and palate without any disagreeable menthol odour. The cpd. is prepd. by reacting menthone with ketene and n-butyl titanate to give beta-hydroxyester, which is then reduced with lithium aluminium hydride.
