Abstract

In a thermal steam cycle power plant, comprising a steam generator, expansion machine, heat accumulator capable of storing heat derived from the base thermal source and of restoring it to the steam cycle and a steam generator feed water heater using live steam from the generator as heating fluid, generally as disclosed in the parent Application, the improvement whereby means are provided for circulating live steam as heating fluid to the ehat accumulator during the heat storage phase and/or means for circulating steam generator feed water during the heat restoration phase, as fluid to be heated, through the accumulator and then through the live steam water heater. More esp., a heat exchanger is provided for cooling and condensing live steam and transferring the heat therefrom to the accumulator and for heating the steam generator feed water and withdrawing heat from the accumulator. The system is better adapted to the changing demand pattern of a power palnt supplying electricity to the distribution network, and, because of the greater temperature difference across the heat exchangers due to the use of live steam, more efficient heat exchange is secured enabling the size of th eheat exchangers to be reduced.
