Abstract

contg. ca. 1-3C atoms in each alkoxy gp. are prepd. by reacting a 1,3,5-trihalobenzene (pref. 1,3,5-tribromobenzene) with an alkali ca. 1-3C alcoholate (pref. a sodium or potassium alcoholate) in the presence of a copper salt (pref. a copper halide, esp. Cu (I) iodide, Cu (II) chloride or Cu (II) bromide) and of an aprotic solvent (pref. a tert. amide, esp. diemthylformamide). It is prefd. to use ca. 0.05-0.15 mol. Cu salt per mol. trihalobenzene. The prodt. is pref. isolated by dried distillation from the reaction mixt. The prodts. are useful as inters. Some are also used in the textile and pharmaceutical industry. The process is single-stage giving 1,3,5-trialkoxybenzenes in high (>90%) yields from readily obtainable starting matls. with short reaction times.
