Abstract

A hydraulic actuator for the vertical spindle of the rudder of a boat, is ring shaped, enclosing the spindle, and has a lower casing portion (5) and an upper casing portion (6) forming a hollow ring shaped chamber between them, enclosing an arc shaped piston (18, 19), with inlet and outlet (14, 15) to one side for the hydraulic fluid. The lower portion (5), has a central cup shaped region (22) and a seal (25) forming a seating for the spherical lower part (11) of the piston, and a top cover (7) also has a sloping seating surface and a seal (26) for the top of the piston. A hollow in the centre of the piston houses a stack of inflatable locking rings (37) with vertical compression screws through them, for locking the rudder spindle (1) to the piston. The arrangement takes up shock loads and misalignment.
