Abstract

Reefing of sails is facilitated by this design of boom which consists of a shorter portion (h) on which slides telescopically the boom proper (a). The short portion is fixed to the mast (i) and a handle (m) operates the arrangement by coiling a rope (n) around a shaft (k) which slides in a slot (o), the other end of the rope being attached to a peg on the inner tube. The outer tube carries a slot (b) in which the bottom edge of the sail (c) and a series of hooks (e) are engaged. In use, the boom is shortened and the sail hauled down by the required amount, the eyelets (r, f) are drawn to the boom by means of the reefing line (t) which is wrapped round hook (e). After this, the boom is extended to tighten the edge of the sail and the reef furled by the ties (s). Cheapness, ease of standardisation, high speed reefing, elimination of winches and pulleys and reduction of boom loading are claimed.
