Abstract

The reel is driven by a slipping motor (4), a belt (19) and gears (16, 18). A brake band (6) has one end fixed (5) and the other connected by linkages (26, 26) to a pivoted arm (12, 13) with a pulley (24) at its end. The wire (22) is drawn from the reel round a fixed pulley (15) and the moving pulley. A rubber end stop (7) acts against the top of the pivoting arm. When there is no pull applied to the wire the rubber stop and the weight of the arm exert maximum braking effect with the motor slipping. Tension on the wire partially releases the brake, letting the motor drive the reel. If the wire unwinds from the reel too quickly, the brake is re-applied.
