Abstract

Non-planar articles made from resin impregnated cloth by prefabricating simple forms in a partially cured state and subsequently packing several complementary preforms coated with more resin into another mould for consolidation and curing by heat and press. to obtain the required final shape and thickness as an integral item. Esp. for mfr. of helmets for firemen, riot police, etc. by suitable combinations of preforms made in simple bowl or shell shapes. Unitary construction offers more strength and toughness than prior art assemblies for shapes difficult to produce in a single stage, also better protection against flames or electric shock. Typically the preforms involve only 3-4 layers of impregnated cloth, and the average thickness of the final object incorporates several overlapped preforms.
