Abstract

Stable emulsions are made by polymerising ethylene with an acrylic component of formula H2C=C(R)-COOR1 where R=H or CH3 and R1=H or 1-4C alkyl gp at temps of 75-150 degrees C and press. of 100-350 kg/cm2, in an aq. medium contg. a water-sol. free radical initiator and a non-ionic or anionic emulsifying agent. The resulting stable emulsions are esp. useful as polish compsns. The acrylic component may be e.g. (meth)acrylic acid or a (meth)acrylic ester. The initiator is pref. a water soluble persulphate, used at 0.07-0.6 wt. % on the aq. medium. The emulsifying agent may be e.g. an alkali alkyl aryl sulphonate, e.g. an alkali metal salt of an alkylbenzenesulphonic acid with 6-18C alkyl gp or a non-ionic emulsifier of formula (I): (where R1=8-9C alkyl gp and n=7-15), used at 0.7-3.5% by wt on the aq medium.
