Abstract
1350282 Vinyl acetate emulsion copolymers REED INTERNATIONAL Ltd 21 July 1972 [21 April 1971] 10565/71 Heading C3P The invention comprises an emulsion of a copolymer of vinyl acetate with 0À001 to 2À0% by weight (based on the total monomers) of allyl- or methallylsulphonic or sulphosuccinic acid or a salt thereof, produced by emulsion polymerization in the presence of a dispersing agent. The salt may be an alkali metal salt or an ammonium or quarternary ammonium salt. Preferred monomers are sodium allyl or methallyl sulphonate, and disodium allyl or methallyl sulphosuccinate. The dispersing agent may be of the anionic, nonionic or cationic type. A 25 to 75 to 75 to 25 by weight mixture of an anionic and a nonionic agent may be used. Anionic agents preferred are sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate, sodium lauryl sulphate or a sodium alkylaryl sulphonic, e.g. dodecyl benzene sulphonate. Preferred nonionic agents are of the polyoxy ethylene type. The dispersing agent may also be a water soluble polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol. Conventional initiators, preferably redox, are used for the polymerization. Other monomers such as a C 1 -C 22 alkanol alkenoate, an unsaturated acid, styrene, vinyl or vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, N - methylolacrylamide, diacetoneacrylamide, a vinyl or allyl C 3 -C 12 alkanoate, ethylene, or a C 3 -C 22 alpha olefin. The emulsions are used for coating.
