Abstract

A tared balance supporting a small conveyor belt accepts and offloads successive samples of controlled gross volume taken from bulk quantities of low density particulate materials. Detection of deviation of the tared balance from preset limits to activate a control to correct operating conditions where the balance is used as an on-line monitor sampling a production process. It is esp. used for controlling production of expanded polystyrene beads, either by indirectly controlling the quantity of steam admitted to the expansion chamber or by adjusting the feed rate of the pre-expanded beads or by adjusting the volume of the chamber in which the beads are expanded.
