Abstract

The equipment may be used for checking the filling of a vessel, typically an oil tank, with liquid, which fills an outer housing (9), within which is an inner body (1) of paraboloid or ellipsoidal form, which is normally filled with a gas such as air. A light source (2) is mounted at one focus of the system and a photo-electric cell or other photo-electric converter (3) at another focus. As long as the main vessel is full of liquid, the light rays from the source are totally reflected and converge on the pick-up to give a positive electric signal, which may be used to operate a level detector or a control device.
