Abstract
Indicator has a float with a radioactive tracer on it, and it surrounds a tube extending to the base of the tank. This contains an optical fibre together with, at some precise point or along its whole length, a scintillation material which is energised by the ionising radiation from the source of the float. Mounted over the tube at the end of the optical fibre is detector which monitors the strength or presence of a light signal. This is then used either as an indicator or alarm as to the level in the tank. Used esp. for measuring levels in storage tanks of petrol or oil.
