Abstract

A strip heating device for the nozzle of a plastics injecting machine comprises a resistance heating element and supply cable. The entire unit is encapsulated to protect the supply cable and heating resistors from any contact with the hot plastics. The heating strip is pref. a hermetically sealed sleeve contg. the resistors, having an external cap into which the supply cable is positioned; the latter part of the supply cable being contained in a hermetically sealed sheath. The strip, cap and sheath are connected together, e.g., by welding or soldering to form a closed unit. The length of the protective sleeve around the cable is sufficient (15 cm.) to provent the cable conductors from the plastics. Matls. for all the sheath elements are metals, and the cable sheath is esp. copper. Heat-resistant insulating matl. esp. a mineral insulator, may be contained round the cable inside the sheath. By completely excluding any hot plastics matl., the prodn. of carbonised plastics over a period of time in the region of the cable attachments etc., is prevented, and thus short-circuits are avoided and the life of the entire unit is prolonged.
