Abstract
Normally the fused state is maintained due to the heat generated from the low but sufficient resistance of the fused salt which allows current flow between the tank electrodes. Without some alternate form of heating the main electrodes must be kept supplied at a level sufficient to maintain conduction since in its cooled solid state the salt is a poor conductor. The design employs heating resistances connected in parallel with the main electrodes and positioned between the electrodes. The solid salt is initially heated between the electrodes by the resistances to reduce the resistance of the salt in this region and allow current to flow between the electrodes.
