Abstract

A web cutter for paper or non-woven fabrics comprises a pair of contra-rotating drums from the surface of which project blades which co-operate with fixed blades associated with the respective drums. A web passes around each drum and is cut transversely into sheets between one of the blades on the drum and the fixed blade and the blades on the two drums are off-set by 90 degrees, so that when the two webs pass together through the nip between the two drums the cuts in one web lie half-way between adjacent cuts of the other web. Each drum is provided with several internal ducts connected to a suction source and perforations in the drum surface are connected to the internal ducts by radial ducts, whose dia. increases in a radially outward direction, whereby the webs are held on the surface of the drum by suction. As the cut webs pass through the nip between the two drums curved detachment arms carried pref. on an oscillating shaft enter peripheral grooves in the drums to ensure each individual cut sheet is removed from the drum surface and into an outlet duct. By increasing the dia of the radial ducts in a radial direction a greater suction is applied to the webs thereby ensuring they adhere to the surfaces of the drums. The curved (as opposed to flat) detachment arms exert a more uniform force on the cut sheets and ensure they pass smoothly into the outlet duct.
