Abstract

The powder is composed of Fe(II,III) oxide (magnetite) and has a predetd. particle size so that the sieve residue on a 0.045 mm sieve (DIN 4188) is 0.1%. It is prepd. from Fe2O3 which has been obtd. by a thermal dissocn. of Fe chloride soln., and which is treated (a) at >400 degrees C under oxidising, reducing or neutral conditions, then (b) under reducing conditions, for example in a CO and/or H2 contg. atm., at 550 degrees C so as t form magnetite. The magnetite is then ground to powder to the required mesh size. This mesh size is related to the specific surface area of the iron oxide starting material which must be >0.5 m2/g. The reducing agent may be ground coal, coke or charcoal, hydrocarbon compsns. Pref. the Fe(II,III) oxide contains charcoal. H2 is used for the redn.
