Abstract

PURPOSE: To convert solvent-refined coal into a liquid material in good yields by using an inexpensive catalyst, by using, as the catalyst, a system composed of sulfur or a sulfur compd. and fine powder of an iron ore obtd. by mechanical crushing treatment.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst is used which is composed of fine iron ore powder having a particle size of 40μm or smaller obtd. by mechanically crushing an iron ore such as hematite or limonite and sulfur or a sulfur compd., said sulfur being used in an equivalent ratio of S/Fe of 0.5 or higher. About 1W20wt% above catalyst is added to solvent-refined coal. A reaction is carried out under a hydrogen partial pressure of 50W300kg/cm2 at 330W460°C for 0.5W5hr to produce a liquid material.
