Abstract
The metal container is initially cold worked and it is processed into its final shape without deterioration of the mechanical properties or of the surface finish. The metal is caused to flow by a force which slightly exceeds the yield point. The process is carried out by using an internal mandrel and an external forming roll. The container material is contacted selectively by a roll during its movement and the cold flow of the material is controlled. The combination of the mandrel and roll act aproximately as deep drawing tools on the container. Complicated shapes can be produced at relatively low costs and at high speeds. The closed end of the container is sandwiched between the rotating surfaces for rotating the container for processing.
