Abstract

In the prepn. of cpds. of formula (I) from cephalosporin C, the cephalosporin is first treated with amido-hydrolase enzyme (international classification 3-5-2) to deacylate posn. 7 then the acetoxy function in posn. 3 is reduced to obtain the 3-methyl-3-cephem. (I) are therapeutically active cpds; single stage process gives practically quantitative yields. The cephalosporanic and enzyme extract are pref. in an impure form to eliminate costly purificn. procedures. The reducing agent is pref. sodium borohydride.
