Abstract

A polyethylene oxide is used as release agent between an electric conductor and a cross-linked ethylene polymer insulation. The insulation can easily be stripped from the conductor, e.g. for splicing. The release agent is relatively cheap. The release agent is applied to the conductor as a uniform layer before the polyethylene insulation. The ethylene oxide (EO) polymer contains is not 50 wt. % EO units and is not >50 wt. % of units of structure -R-O-, where R is a 3-6C hydrocarbon gp. A polyethylene oxide with mol. wt. 570-630, or a copolymer of EO and propylene oxide in ratio by wt. of 1-3 : 1 are claimed. The ethylene polymer used as insulant has density 0.915-0.945 g./cc. and melt index 1-25 g./10 mins. Cross-linking may be at 150-180 degrees C. using 1-3 wt. % of a peroxide, e.g. dicumyl peroxide, as cross-linking agent, or at 23-150 degrees C. by irradiation with an electron beam. The insulating composition pref. contains 0.001-1 (0.02-0.05) wt. % of a lubricant, e.g. a fatty acid or its (semi)-ester, a mineral oil, or a natural or synthetic wax, pref. 13-docosenamide; an antioxidant, e.g. 4, 4'-thiobis-6-tert. butyl-m-cresol, is pref. also added.
