Fuel element with integral upper chamber is separated from the stacked fissile pellets by a sintered metal permeable membrane facilitating an internal equalisation of gaseous fission products. Inhibits excessive pressure within the fissile section precipitating burst classing. Enhances fuel element and reactor core integrity.
