Abstract

806,460. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHTHORITY. March 7, 1957 [March 15, 1956], No. 8146/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). In a nuclear reactor, in which the fuel elements lie in channels in the core, the fuel is cooled by gas which flows along the channels and is filtered at each channel outlet. Each filter element consists of a helix of nickel wire inserted into the channel. When the helix becomes choked a ball valve in the filter body opens and permits the free flow of unfiltered gas to the exhaust side. As the filter is located in a region of high neutron flux any solid fuel material trapped therein will react and emit fission products which will be detected at a sampling point near the fuel outlet.
