In an appts. for stabilising a.c. arcs and for striking both a.c. and d.c. arcs for inert gas, plasma or powder arc welding torches, by the known technique of generating arc-striking pulses between one electrode of the torch and the workpiece or a second electrode, >1 quartz piezo-electric element is provided to generate the pulses and can be subjected to a press. as well as being electrically connected to the torch electrode and the workpiece or a second torch electrode. The press. is pref. generated by an a.c. solenoid system.
