Abstract

Continuous measurement of relative humidity or the amount of water vapour held in the atmosphere or in a gas, without the use of amplification or supplementary equipment is enabled by measuring the weight of a material with reversible absorption characteristics. One type of hygrometer comprises a counterweight balance comprising a support column (2) mounted on a base (1). A horizontal beam (3) pivots on top of the support and carrie a container (5) at one end. The weights (4, 7) are carries at the other end and the pointer (8), mounted centrally, indicates on a scale (6). The container contains a cellulose absorbing material in the form of very thin sheets folded and supported similar to a bellows to provide maximum exposed surface area.
