604,863. Measuring the moisture-content of substances. BROCK, R. B. Dec. 6, 1945, No. 33063. [Class 97 (iii)] [Also in Group XVIII] A chemical balance is adapted for measuring moisture content by locating the commodity pan 23 in a compartment 16 of a casing 12, and subjecting it to radiation from an . infra-red lamp 29 backed by a reflector 30, so that material can be dried-out whilst on the pan, and the drop in weight used to measure its moisture content. In the apparatus shown, the balance itself is located in a lower compartment, and the pan 23 is supported on a carriage 21 at one end of the balance beam 18 by rods 22 passing upwardly through a partition 14 separating the compartments. The pan is of polished anodized aluminium, and the compartment 16 lined with polished foil and provided with ventilation openings. A pointer 24 on the beam 18 indicates on a scale 25 calibrated in moisture content, and is initially brought to zero by adjustment of the counterweight 19 with a weight, equal to that of the sample under examination, in the pan 23. Additional weights are applied to extend the range of the apparatus to other ranges than one from zero.
