Abstract
Broken strands in metallic cables such as those of suspension bridges and aerial ropeways are detected by a movable induction coil wound in two axial sections (1b, 1c) with a gap in between. This coil is excited by a.c. of about 100cs. A secondary coil is placed in the gap having two orthogonal coil windings (4, 5), each coil being at 45 deg. to the axis of the cable. The secondary coils are arranged so that there is no net induced voltage to pass to the meter (8). A discontinuity in the cable passing into the gap between the primary coils destroys the symmetry and results in an output, passing out at the other side a similar disturbance is recorded. The assembly is passed from end to end of the cable with means indicating distance gone at which a signal was generated.
