Abstract
Continuous evaporation process in a natural or forced circulation evaporator is improved by introducing a small quantity of an inert gas, e.g. air, into the liquid boiling in the evaporator, the pressure at which gas is introduced being pref. 5-300 mm of Hg absolute. The gas expands greatly as it enters the liquid which is boiling at reduced pressure, and biphase boundary layers are formed on heat-transfer surfaces so that rate of heat flow is increased by >=50%, and the coefficient of heat transfer raised by >=70%. Process is particularly applicable to concentrating H2SO4 to >=85% and also suitable for evaporative concentration of sugar solutions salts, caustic soda, etc.
