Abstract

Twined steel is treated to protect it against corrosion by depositing a layer of chromate, on the tin, immediately after the tin has been applied, using an aq. soln. contg. hexavalent chromium ions, and heating the chromated steel to above 100 degrees C and pref. above the m.pt. of the tin, followed by the usual chemical treatment of the tinned surface. Tin cans so treated have improved resistance to sulphur corrosion and hence to hardening from sulphur existing in meat, fish powdered milk, peas, asparagus and other foods rich in protein. The coating also reduces the tendency for tin to dissolve in fruit juices.
