Abstract

One-piece metal parts contg. magnetic and non-magnetic zones, made by heat-treating a metal blank where one portion is heated to 450-1000 degrees C, and the other portion to between 1000 degrees C, and m.pt. the blank consisting of a metal which acquires a non-magnetic structure through ageing, and magnetic characteristics by hardening at high temp. The zone which is to be non-magnetic is heated to 450-1000 degrees C, and cooled, whereas the magnetic zone is heated between 1000 degrees C, and the m.pt. to produce a magnetic structure and quenched at a speed which prevents the formation of a non-magnetic structure. The pref. heat-treatment temp. for the magnetic zone is 1050-1350 degrees C, and a pref. compsn. is (by % wt) is not >0.1 C, 7-12 Mn, 11-30 Cr, balance Fe, which may also include is not >5 Ni, >=1 of Mo, W, Nb in amt. 1-5, and about 1 Ti. During the formation of a magnetic structure the blank may be cooled in a magnetic field. The process avoids the necessity to join magnetic and non-magnetic components.
