Abstract

The valve is made in one piece with hollow stem which is shorter than its ultimate length. After filling with the appropriate cooling means, the top end is welded-on or otherwise fixed. This produces a valve stem of the desired length, whils avoiding creating a weak area in the disc region. A metal disc may be forced into the bore after filling with coolant and before welding to prevent the coolant being exposed to atmosphere during subsequent operations. The top end piece is preferably of the same diameter as the stem. It may have a projection of smaller diameter, fitting in the bore in the stem.
