Abstract
865,821. Welding by pressure. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 14, 1959 [Aug. 1, 1958], No. 24957/58. Class 83 (4). In pressure-welding a metal end-cap 6 to a metal tube 2 containing a close-fitting rod 1, the tube is provided with a frusto-conical end-face 3 and is supported in a split die 4 having a wall section tapering away from the end-face, the die is supported in a sleeve 5 having a wallsection tapering towards the end face and the end cap is forced against the end face by a tapered punch 8 having a leading face of smaller size than the internal size of the tube so that the end cap slips over the end face during welding. The die is provided with heating means and welding may take place at ambient or elevated temperature.
