Abstract

The thread on the male half is in the form of a coil spring, and in the rest position the ratio of pitch to diameter is slightly different from that of the thread in the female half at the level of the effective contact zones between the two. The discrepancy is such that when screwed home the spring is under load in the axial or diametral direction. Both pitch and diameter of the spring can be greater than those of the female thread, thus placing the spring under both axial and radial load when screwed home. One end of the sring can be free, and the other solidly secured to the male half.
