Abstract

A mandrel whose section is the shape required for the tube is inserted into the tube end. The mandrel is heated by an induction heater of internal diameter slightly larger than the required tube outer diameter. The heater is powered by high frequency electric supply. When the mandrel is hot enough, the tube or the mandrel is moved to deform the tube. Either the tube or the mandrel is held stationary. Only the only the end of the tube is deformed, or the mandrel can be drawn completely through, expanding the tube. Channels within the mandrel deliver inert gas, for example argon, to the mandrel/tube interface to protect the tube. The mandrel is made of high resistivity material with good wear resistance properties.
