Abstract

Particulate material is melted in an oxyhydrogen flame in a furnace, producing spheres of =10 mu dia. which are separated from the combustion products. There spheres may be mixed with untreated powder in such proportions as are necessary to produce a freely flowing mixt. or may be further treated in a pebble mill with untreated powder. The powder is used in the drawing of crystals by the Verneuil process which requires a steady metered flow rate of material. A proportion of spherical particles in otherwise powdery material impart free-flowing qualities to the mixt., preventing blockages and consequent interruptions to the crystal growing process.
