Abstract

The tape is coated with a magneto-optic layer of semiconducting magnetic material of formula CuCrSe3X where X is Cl, Br or I or a non-stoichiometric modification thereof. To write in the data the material is irradiated with laser light in local spots to produce a slight increase of local temp. which remains below the Curie point, while applying a magnetic field to the interior of the tape, which is below the coercive field of the non-illuminated part of the layer but above that of the illuminated part, the tape being thus magnetised and demagnetised locally. The materials used have high specific Faraday rotation (F) and low absorption (x) so that the ratio 2F/x is very high. Erasure is by heating and raising the inductive field simultaneously over the whole tape and subsequent cooling in a magnetic field.
