Abstract

A steel is made possessing a Goss texture and magnetic permeability >=1850 gauss/oersted at a field of 10 oersted. The chemical compsn. is C 0.07% max, Si 2.6-4.0%, Mn 0.03-0.24%, S 0.01-0.07%, Al 0.015-0.04%, N 0.02% max. Cu 0.1-0.5%. The steel is cast, hot-rolled annealed at 760-930 degrees C for 15 sec - 2 hrs. cooled at a speed comparable to still air cooling, and then cold rolled with >=80% reduction. After this, the steel is decarburised by heating for 2 min at 800 degrees C in nitrogen and wet hydrogen and given a texturising anneal for 8 hr. at 1167 degrees C max. in hydrogen. There can also be no anneal at 760-930 degrees C between the hot and cold rolling.
