Abstract

A shackle allows the shearing force on the shackle pin to be taken on the maximum diameter of the pin and not on the screwed portion, by tapping only the outer half of one of the shackle limbs to receive the end of the pin. The other half of the depth is drilled to clear the full pin diameter, as is the other limb of the shackle. Only a short portion of the end of the shackle pins is screwed, so that when assembled a substantial length of the full pin diameter passes inside the tapped limb. The tapped hole may also be blind.
