Abstract

A lifting device for heavy loads, as in the main patent has a bell shaped housing (10) attached to a loop (11) for a lifting hook, with a funnel shaped entry (12) for the sloping point of a necked rod (E) supporting the load. When the bell is lowered onto the rod, the pointed end lifts a pair of latch blocks (24), swings them up, and travels past them until their pointed noses (24') engage the neck of the rod (C) and retain the load. The blocks (24) are supported on horizontal plates (20) positioned between radial ribs which stiffen the bell, and pivot blocks (28) for the latches (24) are carried on the horizontal plates. When the bell is lowered again, the pointed end of the rod (E) contacts a road (58) forcing it up in a slot (59) to actuate a switch (C) and operate a circuit to actuate a pair of electro-magnets (49) which move a pair of arms (44) on each latch, tilting it up, so as to disengage the necked end of the rod (E) and release the load.
