Abstract

The device provides a visible warning that friction linings (2) have worn down to the limit of usefulness and is applicable to vehicle brake shoes, brake pads and clutch discs. In one form a thin insulated metal foil (1) inserted between lining and support (3) has metal studs (5) attached which protrude into distributed holes in the lining (6) and are of height less than the lining thickness by an amount equal to the thickness of useful material. Alternatively a thin insulated wire is looped into a central hole in each of the fixing rivets and indicates wear to this level. A battery is connected in series with the detector, a lamp (visible to the driver) and the metal rubbing plate.
