Abstract

The steel brake lining support (1) is provided with an indentation (11) shaped as required to fit the detector wire (3). This indentation improves the mechanical integrity of the support-lining-detector wire system. After bonding or moulding the lining (2) to the support, a hole is drilled, parallel to the indentation to take the insulated (31) wire which is held in place by polymerisation of the plastic (32). The wire is thus rigidly held in place and electrically isolated. When the lining wears down and exposes the wire, electrical contact is made and this actuates the thickness warning indicator. Various forms are described which have advantages of low production cost or high mechanical strength.
