Abstract

The outward radial force on the rollers of this thrust bearing at high speeds is reacted by contact between the outer face of each roller and a track formed by a cylindrical extension of one of the bearing faces. The inner face of the track s a conical surface of very small angle and each roller outer face is spherical, the centre of the sphere being approximately on the centre line of the bearing. The inner faces of the rollers are preferably ground to the same spherical contour to avoid incorrect assembly and only a simple cage is required to maintain roller spacing.
