Abstract

1435948 Bearings RANSOME HOFFMANN POLLARD Ltd 6 Feb 1974 [2 March 1973] 10288/73 Heading F2A A bearing assembly comprises a stationary member 1, a rotatable member 2 and a plurality of rolling elements 8 each accommodated in a respective recess 10 in the stationary member, wherein each recess is of similar shape to, and is slightly larger than, its respective rolling element and opens towards the rotatable member so that, in use, rotation of each element owing to its contact with the rotatable member occurs without that element contacting the walls of its recess owing to the support of a fluid film formed therebetween. Each recess may be connected to a pressurized fluid supply (e.g. oil or air/oil mist) so that a hybrid fluid film having hydrostatic and hydrodynamic components is formed. The stationary member may comprise two portions 3, 4 keyed together by means of a spring ring 5. The rolling elements and the portions 3, 4 may be of steel or plastics. Each recess may be formed in a part inserted in a cut-out in the portion 4. The rolling elements may be tapered, cylindrical, or L-shaped rollers, or balls.
