Abstract

In multiple disc brakes as fitted to aircraft wheels and consisting of alternate stationary (2) and rotating discs (5) there appears an annular band of perature near the mean disc radius due to frictional heating. This results in loss of braking efficiency, deformation of the discs and a high wear rate. These are improved by relieving the mating surfaces in a series of narrow, shallow grooves (9) arranged concentrically, or preferably, helically or eccentrically. Alternatively a number of circumferential cavities is used. Friction pads may be similarly modified.
