Abstract

A double walled hopper with an oblique lining perforated in its upper regions to admit a preheated gas which fluidises, drys and melts the incoming particles. The molten material collects in the lower zones of the lining where a sensor controls the heat input to maintain a required premoulding temp. in the jacketted hopper. The hopper discharges to an extrusion/injection unit with ancillary heaters of relatively low power for holding or slightly raising the feed temp. to that required for moulding. The profile of the reservoir of melt may be designed so that the necessary shot volume is maintained within a tolerable change in melt levels.
