Abstract

A shaft, rotated by the machine, has a spiral track machined in its surface. A sleeve fits over the shaft and carries the cutting tool. Between the shaft and the sleeve is a ball follower running in the spiral track. The sleeve is prevented from rotating by balls in splines running axially along its length. When the shaft rotates, the follower moves the sleeve up and down, giving reciprocating motion. An outer case completes the unit. The track is formed as a double helix whose oppositely extending paths extend halfway around the shaft.
